Sự hòa hợp giữa Chủ Ngữ và Động Từ

Chia động từ ở dạng số ít đối với chủ ngữ là các trường hợp sau:

1. S1 and S2: nhưng ám chỉ 1 người hoặc 1 vật. Ex: Bread and butter was all we had.
2. Each/ Every + N (luôn luôn ở số ít)          Ex: Each student has to take a test.
3. Time/ Measurement/ Money             Ex: Ten kilometers is too far to walk.
4. Indefinite pronouns (đại từ bất định): Every/ No/ Any/ Some (some/ thing/ body). Ex: I think (that) someone is knocking on the door.
5. The number of + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều     Ex: The number of days in a week is seven.
6. Gerund (V-ing)              Ex: Learning English to communicate with the world is important.
7. One/ Each of + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều        Ex: One of these letters is for you.
8. Who/ What (as Subject)      Ex: Who knows the answer? — What has happened?
9. Names/ Title                   Ex: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is the first book in Harry Potter series.
10. NOUN +”-s” (nhưng là số ít)

11. Uncountable Noun (danh từ không đếm được): advice, furniture, information, luggage, knowledge,…
12. Neither of/ Either of + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều         Ex: Neither of my parents likes my boyfriend.

Chia động từ ở dạng số nhiều đối với chủ ngữ là các trường hợp sau:

• S1 and S2 (2 chủ thể riêng biệt)                 Ex: Lan and Ba are students.
• The + Adj (= people): the rich, the poor, the blind, the deaf, the handicapped

Ex: The poor need help from us.

• A number of + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều

Ex: A number of students are going to the class picnic.

• People, police, livestock, cattle         t l    poultr    pəʊl.tri/  Ex: The police are questioning the suspect.
• Pair nouns: Clothes, trousers, jeans, shorts, tights, leggings, gloves, socks, glasses, binoculars, scissors sɪz.əz/, tongs, pliers, chopsticks, compasses    ʌm.pəsɪz/, sandals   s n dəlz/, tweezers   twiː zəz/,  pajamas = pyjamas /pɪ dʒɑː məz/,…..

Note: A pair of + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều + V (dạng số ít)

Ex: The leggings are in the drawer.    BUT: A pair of leggings is in the drawer.

• Both S1 and S2         Ex: Both Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus have blonde hair.

Chia động từ ở dạng số ít hoặc số nhiều các trường hợp sau:

1. Hình ảnh

Ex: Either John or Bill is going to the beach today.

Either Henry or his friends have seen this movie before.

Neither John nor the boys are going to the beach today.

2. Hình ảnh

Ex: California, along with Florida and Hawaii, is among the most popular US tourist destinations.

3. There + be + Noun

Ex: There have been a number of telephone calls today.

4. N1 + giới từ + N2 + V (chia theo N1) Ex: The students in my class are hard-working

5. N1 + who/ which/ that + V (chia theo N1)         Ex: The music that they listen to helps them relax.

6. Organizations/ Collective nouns: Congress, Government, committee, class, public, jury, the army, the navy, the air force, group, team.

V chia ở ngôi 3 số ít -> Ám chỉ toàn tập hợp

V chia ở ngôi thứ 3 số nhiều -> Ám chỉ các thành viên trong nhóm đ ng hoạt động riêng rẽ.

Ex: Congress votes for the bill. / Congress are voting for the bill. (some agree, some disagree)
